In 1973, the Izhevsk Automobile Factory produces a new model based on Moskvich 412 units – Izh 2125 Combi. This is the first Soviet-made car with a liftback body, where the rear door has a small peculiar protrusion. The origin of the word “Combi” originates from the German terminology, based on which it is a car with an additional rear door in the back. The implementation of Izh 2125 contributed to the wide interest of the domestic auto industry in the popularization in Western Europe of cars with practical and spacious “hatchback” and “liftback” bodies. As a result, the designers took the Moskvich 412 sedan as a basis for the Izh “Combi”. The suspension was strengthened, the body was carefully thought out.

IZH 2125 Kombi Features
An important difference from station wagons is the presence of a special shelf that separates the luggage compartment from the passenger compartment. Of course, there is no complete isolation of cargo from passengers, like on sedans, but in the Izh-Kombi’s cabin it is almost as quiet and comfortable as in an ordinary four-door “limousine”.
The long roof and large tailgate opening weakened the body compared to a conventional sedan. Therefore, the rear of the Izh-2125 was reinforced with new power elements, which formed a kind of integrated frame. And in order to cope with the loads and the suspension, additional spring sheets were introduced into it. Subsequently, for its high ability to transport goods, the strong and unpretentious Izh-Kombi was appreciated by many owners – especially those who lived in the countryside.

Even in the late eighties, Combi was in stable demand due to a successful set of consumer qualities – good carrying capacity, endurance, unpretentiousness, simplicity and relative reliability.

Izh-2125 was used in Soviet motorsport. In particular, in winter track races, rallies, autocross, circuit car races.
